Meghalaya Zest Fest

The state of Meghalaya, located in the North-Eastern region of India, is formed by a detached block of the Deccan plateau resulting in a unique geographical landscape and is home to a variety of unique fruits one of them being the meghalayan mandarin.This unique terrain has resulted in varied landscapes with scenic views and cascading waterfalls. The variation in elevation and climatic conditions has also resulted in diverse agro-ecological conditions, resulting in high levels of species diversity and endemism. These geographical features also make for favorable conditions for a diverse range of agriculture and horticulture crops. Meghalaya’s varied agro climatic conditions allows for a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, spices, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants of high economic value.
The North-East region of India was more or less left untouched by the interventions of the Green Revolution, which in hindsight can be seen as a blessing in disguise. The large-scale use of chemical fertilizer and chemical pesticides, which were indicative of the Green Revolution, is to an extent not as prevalent in agricultural lands of the state. This means that most of the land in Meghalaya remains naturally organic which can be utilized in the production of organic products that can potentially fetch higher remuneration in both the national and international markets
