The People
Meghalaya is predominantly a farmer’s homeland. The vast countryside is dotted with hills and valleys that are painted with golden paddy fields and vegetable terrace gardens. Each home in the city or village finds in it a backyard where all manner of fruits and vegetables are grown. Not a season goes by when the land is not farmed.
Nurturing Nature's Bounty
Major food grain crops produced in the State during the Kharif season are rice, maize, and tur.Meghalaya’s varied agro climatic conditions allows for a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, spices, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants of high economic value. Some of the popular crops grown in the state include Mandarin Orange, Pineapple, Banana, Turmeric, Ginger, Chillies etc. The presence of high value horticultural crops which are endemic to the region further provides more impetus to push for horticulture in the state. Every blade of grass, every fruit and vegetable as such, is nurtured by the clouds. Every grain of food produced in Meghalaya, in turn, carries with it a promise of integrity; a promise of being completely natural and sourced directly from the farmer’s home. Lakadong turmeric, which is globally known to be the best turmeric variety with high curcumin content, has attracted much attention from all fronts. Other products such as Khasi Mandarin, Soh, Sohphlang(Flemingia vestita).Various types of edible mushrooms, have high potential in the food industry owing to their distinct taste.In a time when staying healthy has taken on paramount importance, the food we eat helps decide how healthy we truly are.
